There's no honest flat rate we can quote you before we've seen the room — but there is a clear set of factors that determine where your budget goes. Understanding them means you walk into a quote knowing exactly what you're paying for.

1. Layout changes vs keeping plumbing and gas where they are

This is the single biggest lever in any kitchen budget. If your sink, dishwasher and gas hob stay roughly where they already are, the plumbing and gas fitting stays simple and inexpensive. Move the sink to an island or relocate the hob to a new wall, and you're into new pipework, new gas runs, possibly new drainage, and sometimes consent — all of which add real cost before a single cabinet goes in. If your budget is tight, keeping fixtures in their existing positions is the most effective saving available, full stop.

2. Cabinetry — usually the biggest single line item

Cabinetry is where most of a kitchen budget lives. Custom-built cabinetry, sized precisely to your space with soft-close drawers, internal organisers and made-to-measure panels, costs meaningfully more than flat-pack or semi-custom options — but it also fits properly, uses every centimetre of an awkward space, and lasts. Flat-pack can be a sensible choice for a straightforward, standard-sized layout; it's a false economy in a tricky or non-standard room where off-the-shelf sizing forces compromises. 3. Benchtop material tier

Benchtops move the number more than people expect, and the jump between tiers is meaningful. Laminate is the most affordable option and has come a long way in look and durability. Engineered stone sits above it — harder-wearing, more heat and stain resistant, and available in a wider range of finishes. Natural stone sits at the top: no two slabs are identical, and it brings a genuine premium look, but it needs more careful fabrication, sealing and handling. None of these is the "wrong" choice — it's about matching the tier to your budget and how the kitchen gets used day to day.

4. Appliances

Appliance packages can vary hugely, and it's rarely just about the appliances themselves — it's how they integrate. Fully integrated fridges and dishwashers behind custom cabinetry cost more in cabinetry and installation than a freestanding equivalent. Deciding early whether you want a fully integrated look or a more visible, freestanding approach helps us build an accurate quote rather than a rough guess.

5. Splashback and tiling

A simple, large-format splashback in a single material is quick to install and keeps costs down. Feature tiling, intricate patterns, or a full-height statement wall behind the hob take considerably longer to set out and lay, and that labour time shows up in the quote. As with bathrooms, you can choose to splurge on a feature that gets seen every day, or keep things simple and put the saving elsewhere.

6. Electrical and lighting

Modern kitchens carry more electrical load than kitchens built even fifteen years ago — under-cabinet lighting, pendant lights over an island, dedicated circuits for ovens and induction hobs, extra power points for appliances that didn't exist last decade. The more new circuits and fittings you add, and the more you move existing wiring to suit a new layout, the more electrician's time goes into the job. A well-thought-out lighting plan is worth the investment, but it's worth pricing early rather than adding it as an afterthought.

7. Flooring flow-through

If your new kitchen flooring needs to match or flow into an adjoining living or dining space, that's more material and more careful levelling and transition work than a kitchen that stops at its own walls. Open-plan homes look fantastic with continuous flooring, but it's worth knowing upfront that flow-through flooring adds to the scope — and it's an easy thing to overlook when you're focused on cabinetry and benchtops.

8. Trades coordination
